Jane Strauss, advocate

Picture
Jane Strauss hitched a ride from New Haven, Connecticut to Minneapolis in 1976.  The car, a 1962 Falcon station wagon, only made it to Mauston, WI before its engine burned and both folks in it shipped their stuff by Grayhound and hitchhiked the rest of the way with 2 guitars, a dobro, and a sheltie-border collie cross named Pepper.  She has never left.

The trip out is typical of the way in which Jane deals with setbacks - she just keeps going.  And that is how she handles advocacy as well.

Jane holds the BA, BS Ed , JD and MAPA degrees.  She has also studied in a Christian seminary and a Medical School without completing either course, because she found something she would prefer and could not see finishing just to finish. Her broad range of education has given her the ability to translate specialized vocabulary across disciplines, a valuable skill in the case of advocacy around disability issues.

Jane understands the spectrum of disability from the consumer, the parent, and the professional's point of view.  A lifelong geek/wallflower, she was finally correctly diagnosed with Asperger's and nonverbal learning disorders in the current century.    Her training and experience working as a teacher for students from preschool through post secondary, both with and without disabilities, have honed her understanding of the American educational system.
She has also worked in allied medical professions,  within the juvenile justice system and in social service agencies. Her experience raising 5 children, one of whom has significant medical issues and all of whom are unique and quirky, has given much information about the actual functioning of the medical establishment and the schools, and provided eight years (and still going) of experience as a home educator.

Jane has worked within private, public, charter, and home educational settings, and has developed cross-agency programming when that was appropriate.  She is ready to help you take on your challenges and reach solutions.
